Professor Nigel Lovell

Bio
Scientia Professor Lovell is the Head of the School of Biomedical Engineering, UNSW working in the areas of bionics, telehealth, deep learning, artificial hearts and biorobotics. Nigel has authored 400+ journal papers and been awarded over $120 million in R&D funding.
Over his career he has mentored 100 PhD students and delivered more than 150 keynote presentations. He is a Fellow of seven learned academies throughout the world. He is also actively involved in medtech translation having co-founded four startups.
For 2017 and 2018 Nigel was the President of the world’s largest biomedical engineering society – the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and he continues to be actively involved in professional outreach internationally.
Nigel was named the inaugural Co-Director of the Tyree Institute of Health Engineering (IHealthE). In this role, he drives the Institute’s vision to deliver transformative digital and telehealth innovations, developing and translating technologies that enhance connectivity, efficiency, and outcomes for both patients and clinicians.
